Rose’s story

What do you do at Victim Support?

I’ve been volunteering with Victim Support since 1992. I’m a Community Volunteer supporting victims of serious crime; previously I was a Homicide Volunteer and Hate Crime Champion, and I’m also a keen fundraiser!

What are your highlights from volunteering with Victim Support?

Some years ago I supported a family who were affected by burglary. Being able to give the family their confidence back after the crime and seeing the children smile again was definitely a highlight. It’s also important for me to work together with people and be a part of a team. You’re not ‘just a volunteer’ – you’re appreciated for what you do.

What have you gained from your volunteering experience?

Excellent training! I’ve attended a wide range of courses such as homicide training, domestic violence, hate crime awareness and data protection. I’ve also helped other volunteers with their training. Volunteering with Victim Support has widened my world, highlighted my capabilities and inspired possibilities – it has given me confidence and helped to develop me as a person.

What would you say to people thinking about volunteering with Victim Support?

The rewards are so great and it makes you feel privileged to be able to help – seeing someone getting back to who they were before the incident is very rewarding.
