Going to courtAnna2021-05-07T10:07:46+00:00

Going to court

If you have seen or heard about a crime, or been the victim of one, you may have to talk about what happened at court. This is called giving evidence and by doing this you will be a witness. Lots of young people go to court as witnesses, so don’t feel that you’re alone. Remember, you haven’t done anything wrong, and you will have lots of support.

This content has been written for children and young people. If you’re looking for information for over 18s, visit our Going to Court information.

Interactive courtroom

The interactive courtroom can help you understand what happens when you are a witness at court.

The court process

It's important that you understand the court process if you are going to be a witness.

Support at court

A lot of witnesses – adults and young people – feel nervous about going to court, but it's important to remember that you're not alone, you haven't done anything wrong, and there will be people who are there to help and support you.

Preparing for court

The more prepared you are for court, the less worried you will be and the easier it will be to give your best evidence.

Giving your evidence

You are going to court to tell the judge and jury or magistrate what happened to you, or what you saw or heard.

After giving evidence

After you have answered all the questions, your job is finished. The judge or magistrates will thank you for being a witness and tell you that you can go.
