Katie Kempen, Chief Executive at Victim Support, said:

“With the abolition of Police and Crime Commissioners fast approaching, we urgently need clarity on the future funding of the vital victims’ services they currently commission – so we welcome the Police Reform Bill included in today’s King’s Speech.

“This reform is a real opportunity to end the current postcode lottery of support and deliver more effective help for all victims. This means guaranteeing access to independent support by ending the diversion of victims’ funding into policing, and ensuring future funding is properly ringfenced and protected.

“If we get this right, the new system will deliver better support for all victims, without exception – whatever the crime and wherever they live.

“Alongside the new legislation it’s essential that the government brings into force the remaining provisions in the Victims and Prisoners Act – which became law almost two years ago – so victims’ rights become a reality, not just words on paper.

“We stand ready to work with the government to deliver meaningful, lasting change for victims.”
