Today, the government announced the start of the Victims’ Code consultation – about plans to amend the Victims’ Code.
Our CEO, Katie Kempen responded:
“The Victims’ Code is the foundation of victims’ rights in this country, setting out fundamental entitlements to information, communication and specialist support. But, 20 years after its introduction, far too few people even know the Code exists – and far too often public bodies meant to deliver these basic rights are failing to do so. This needs to urgently change.
“This consultation should be a turning point, moving from promises to delivery – rights on paper are meaningless unless they are properly promoted, enforced and accessible to victims when they need them most. We will be examining today’s revisions in detail to ensure that any changes genuinely improve victims’ experiences and meet their needs.
“Our message to victims is clear: these are your rights and your voice matters. We encourage you to take part in the consultation and help shape a Victims’ Code that truly delivers for everyone affected by crime.”
