Katie Kempen, Chief Executive at Victim Support said:

“It is deeply disappointing that today’s Budget makes no mention of funding for victims’ services. Victims of crime have a right to access support under the Victims’ Code, yet these services have been pushed to crisis point by repeated cuts and frozen budgets. This year alone, a 4.2% reduction in core funding has left thousands of victims at risk of being turned away. These decisions are not only short-sighted, they are economically reckless and undermine victims’ rights and wellbeing.

Our landmark report, Support That Saves, shows that for every £1 invested in victims’ services, up to £10.80 is saved through reduced healthcare costs, improved productivity and lower long-term harm. Cuts to these services are a false economy: they cost the public purse more than they save. Victims’ services help people navigate the justice system, stay in work and manage their wellbeing. When victims are supported, society benefits. When they are abandoned, the human and financial costs are devastating.

These services aren’t just life-changing, they are cost-saving. Access to support is a right and funding it is a moral duty. We urge the Government to reverse these cuts and commit to secure, multi-year funding. Anything less fails victims and misses a vital opportunity to invest in a safer, fairer society.”
