VS responds to the ONS crime statistics: childhood sexual abuse

4 August 2016

Lucy Hastings, Director at independent charity Victim Support, said:

“These figures paint a disturbing picture of the scale of childhood sexual abuse in England and Wales – a horrific crime which can have devastating and long lasting consequences on the lives of those affected.

“As a charity which helps thousands of victims of childhood sexual abuse every year, we understand how difficult it can be for victims to make the brave decision to speak up. Victims need to have confidence that they will be believed and properly supported when they come forward, and that they will be treated sensitively and with respect.

“It is vital that all children receive age-appropriate education to stay safe, so that they are equipped with the knowledge, skills and safe spaces to understand and discuss these issues.”
