The Victims’ Commissioner has today published Forgotten victims: barriers to justice following a road traffic collision. This report examines victims’ experiences of the criminal justice system following criminal road traffic collisions and makes recommendations for change.

“We welcome this important report from the Victims’ Commissioner, which exposes the barriers to justice faced by victims and bereaved families of road traffic collisions. The findings are deeply concerning. Too many victims are not treated seriously, face long investigations and poor experiences at court, and endure a postcode lottery when it comes to support.

 

“These failings have a real and lasting impact and they demand urgent action. We echo the Commissioner’s calls for victims of road traffic collisions to be treated with dignity, compassion and respect, for more consistent police investigations and trauma-informed training, and for more sustainable funding for specialist support services.”
