VS response on knife crime in schools

29 January 2016

Victim Support responds to the Sunday Mirror on knife crime in schools.

Lucy Hastings, director for independent charity Victim Support, said:

“As a charity that has supported thousands of young victims, we know the devastating effects violent crime can have on victims’ and their families’ lives. The trauma and fear they suffer may be magnified if the crime happens in a place like school, where a young person should feel safe.

“Crime prevention work can be effective and efforts to educate young people about the dangers of possessing weapons must be stepped up – particularly in light of the recent rise in the number of gun and knife crimes, after many years of falling figures.

“And it’s crucial that young victims are able to seek the help and support they may need following crime. Our specialist Children and Young People team is here to support young victims confidentially practically and emotionally – no one needs to suffer in silence. Victims can contact us by calling our Supportline on 08 08 16 89 111 or getting in touch via our specialist Children and Young People website – www.you&co.org.uk.”
