VS responds to the ONS crime statistics for year 2014/15

11 February 2016

Independent charity Victim Support responds to the ONS crime statistics released today: Focus on Violent Crime and Sexual Offences for the year 2014/15.

Mark Castle, Chief Executive of independent charity Victim Support, says:

“While the increase in the reporting and better recording of sexual crime is to be welcomed, there is still a long way to go in improving the support given to victims who make the brave decision to speak up and seek justice.

“Sexual offences have a devastating and long lasting impact on people’s lives and it is vital that victims who come forward are treated with respect and given high quality support every step of the way through the criminal justice system, from speaking to the police to giving evidence in court, in order to help them rebuild their lives.

“The increase in firearm and knife crime offences that these statistics show is also a growing cause for concern. These crimes shatter the lives of so many – particularly young people and their families – and more must be done, by agencies and educators working in partnership, to educate people about the dangers of carrying weapons.”
