How we can help
We give emotional and practical help to people who have been affected by crime in Gwent. We’re an independent charity and you can contact us for support regardless of whether you’ve contacted the police, and no matter how long ago the crime took place. We’ll help you for as long as it takes to overcome the impact of crime.
If you call your local Victim Support team in Gwent, we’ll make sure you get the information and support you need. This might be arranging a meeting for you to talk to us and receive emotional support in confidence, helping you to fill out a compensation form or get advice on how to make your home more secure, or referring you to other specialist organisations that can also help.
Victim Support Cymru has been commissioned by the Welsh Government to support victims of hate crime and incidents in Wales. We are the official support mechanism and are working to increase reporting of hate crime and to raise awareness of what a hate crime is.
Last year we offered immediate support to over 12,000 people affected by crime in Gwent, and gave in-depth support to nearly 1,300 people.
One of the people we’ve helped to cope after crime is Mark, who was a victim of assault.
I was assaulted while trying to intervene in a domestic violence attack. After the assault I lost all my confidence; I changed my routine, not walking the dogs as I didn’t want people judging me because of my facial injuries. I have been unable to work or drive because of my injuries.
Victim Support rang me, and me and my wife met with the volunteer. He made us feel at ease, arranged for the police to contact us, and supported us both. He reassured me that I had not done anything wrong and helped with the compensation claim.
Victim Support have given me the confidence to go back out there; I am hoping to go back to work soon and am in my normal routine of walking the dogs again.
