I’m currently studying a BSc Psychology with Neuroscience and have been undertaking a student placement with Victim Support as a Victim Advocate and Witness Supporter.

VS volunteer Remise

Remise, Victim Advocate and Witness Supporter

When I first read the role description and researched more into the organisation I was immediately impressed with the work that they do and the educational information about crime on the website. I was instantly inspired by their work and eager to get an application sent in.

My day-to-day consisted of me sat in my spare room at my desk, working with clients through Skype calls, attending training over Zoom and shadowing calls being made by other caseworkers. The government’s guidelines meaning that we were all working from home made my experience very different to other volunteers in the past.

I quickly got used to my daily routine. It felt strange having only ever met my colleagues through a screen but we still felt like a close-knit team and I knew that they were only a Skype message away if I ever needed any help.

Working with clients was daunting at first but ultimately the most rewarding. I am proud to be able to say that I have contributed to the work that Victim Support does.

Since being with VS, I’ve gained a massive amount of confidence. Before being on placement, I was very unsure of myself and my abilities but by pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I have proven to myself that I can do it. Role plays during training were something that I used to dread but am now able to embrace. I’m grateful for the safe space created while in training that allowed me to confidently participate and make mistakes without feeling judged. I’ve gained the most valuable experience that I know will help me greatly in my future career.
