Victim Support responds to MoJ reoffending stats

28 July 2016

Lucy Hastings, Director for independent charity Victim Support, says:

“These high reoffending rates represent a shocking failure by the criminal justice system to ensure that offenders are reformed and rehabilitated – a failure which leads to more victims having their lives shattered by crime. That the reoffending rate for those convicted of violence against the person remains at the highest level in a decade is, in particular, a serious cause for concern.

“Research tells us that what victims want most is for the offending to stop and clearly that is not happening. There is an urgent need for all criminal justice agencies to redouble their efforts to reduce reoffending, including placing greater emphasis on educating offenders about the impact of their crimes on victims’ lives.”
