Quality and standards

The work of the individual charities which were members of the Victim Support national association was monitored by a dedicated quality and standards inspectorate which operated independently from the rest of the National Office (now the National Centre). Its objectives were to:

Inspection reports were written for the member charities themselves and for the Funding Panel of the national association to be used to inform decisions about the renewal of funding. These reports are also public documents and can be viewed below.

However, the creation of a single, national charity to replace the former federation during 2008 means that our monitoring systems need to change too. As a result, the Quality & Standards Department was closed down in 2007. We are currently introducing new performance management systems across England and Wales. Keep watching the website for further information during 2008.

Inspections

Another key feature of the work of the department was its participation in, and contribution to, joint inspections, carried out by the five inspectorates of the criminal justice bureaucracies - police, courts, the Crown Prosecution Service, probation and prisons. Joint inspections look at the functioning of local criminal justice boards, and their success in addressing issues such as improving public confidence in the criminal justice system, and in particular, at enhancing the services to victims and witnesses.

The Q&S Department was involved in a number of these inspections, and through them has strengthened the focus given in joint inspections to victim and witness issues.

Reports

*Until mid-2008, Victim Support's services in the community and in court (the Witness Service) have been organised into 'areas', generally along county lines, which operated as independent charities affiliated to a national association. During early 2008 these local charities are merging to form a single, national charity for England and Wales.
